Introduction on getting to Coron
Tourists arriving at Coron Town for the first time may be a bit disappointed seeing the appearance of the town- no beach, a pier full of half constructed buildings, and ramshackle houses constitute the waterfront. However, this touristic town is to be considered a dockyard or base camp for further adventures at Coron Island. A twenty minute boat ride from Coron Town takes you to the serene and mysterious island that boasts attractions, like Lake Barracuda, Lake Kayangan, Twin Lagoons, and Banol Beach, etc. Coron Island is also famous for diving, snorkeling, kayaking in the abundant natural mangrove forests, mountain biking, and jungle trekking.
The Tagbanua, a Filipino tribe that has inhabited the island for generations, constitute most of the population of Coron Island. Fishermen by profession, they also collect edible balinsasayaw or bird’s nests; the main ingredient for Nido soup at El Nido.
Divers from all over the world dream of going for a dive at Lake Barracuda, which is famous for its many layers of freshwater, salt water, and brackish water. It is truly a challenge for professional divers, as these different water layers are also the cause of sudden temperature shifts in the water. The large Coron Sign is a Hollywood style, whimsical sign visible from a distance that welcomes tourists to this heavenly destination.
Coron is connected to the outside world via Francisco B. Reyes Airport, formerly known as Busuanga Airport. This small airport serves the general area of Coron, which includes Coron Town, Busuanga, and subsequently, Coron Island. It has been named after the former mayor of Coron, Francisco B. Reyes. During his mayoral term from 1936 to 1939, he donated the land strip that now houses the current airport complex of Coron.
A few airlines operate flights that go in and out of Coron through this airport. Among them, Air Juan operates a flight to Puerto Princesa and another from Caticlan. The others, Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, Cebgo, and Skyjet fly to Manila.
